Jaipur Marathon, Rotary ‘End Polio Now‘ Celebration and a Visit to a School in a Deprived Area

The team joined members of Rotary Clubs in Jaipur to celebrate the complete eradication of polio in India.  A truly special event hosted on a stage where members of Rotary and special guests could watch the marathon race.  Both teams had the pleasure of meeting Rajasthan’s health minister and groups of Rotarians from Jaipur.  Everyone was wearing yellow t-shirts and baseball caps to mark the occasion.

Our next visit was to a school situated in a deprived area on the outskirts of Jaipur where adults and children make a living of approximately $2 per day collecting and recycling paper and cloth.  Consequently the children are forced to go out to work to survive each day.  We met 3 volunteers who work tirelessly in the school to educate the children and give them a chance in life.  This school is supported by Jaipur Rotary clubs and the story began when one of the school’s volunteers visited Rtn. Chandresh Nagar’s shop to purchase a fan for the living area.  When Rtn. Nagar realised the volunteers were working in a particularly deprived area, he visited and then decided that this would become a new project for Rotarians in Jaipur.  This school provides invaluable opportunities to these children which they would not otherwise have.  Some of the girls have competed in regional dance competitions on a level with their more fortunate counterparts through the dance scheme setup within the school.  In addition, one young boy now plays cricket for the state of Rajasthan.  These two examples highlight the importance of the work undertaken by both the volunteers and local Rotary Clubs.

The UK and NZ teams were humbled and moved by both the living conditions and the positive results of the education provided to these children.  The children gave a dance performance and recited their knowledge of English to the teams, illustrating the difference that Rotary and Rotarians make to the world and local community.
