The team were privileged to visit a school setup to provide blind children with an education. The school has a current cohort of 20 students aged between 5 to 18 years and is jointly sponsored by the Indian government and the Rotary Club of Jaisalmer. This invaluable institution has enabled the students to become highly adaptive, proficient and skilled individuals who can pursue technical vocational training after their time at the blind school. The team received a warm welcome from the students, 3 of which sung a fantastic heart warming song to mark our visit. The school is raising money to build a purpose built premises in order to expand and provide an improved and much needed education. According to the staff at the school, reasonable provisions exist for blind children in larger cities but there is still much needed work to be done to establish the necessary facilities in remote villages. Another challenge is encouraging parents of girls to put their faith in these specialist schools in order that their child can reap the benefits of an education. This was a particularly moving experience for the team but also made us appreciate the wonderful work of Rotary.
